Here on Earth

AC, I agree. The music video and - to some extent - the song, are not shining examples of all that art can be. But that's not the point I was trying to make. It's their approach to music that I find so intriguing. As I said earlier, my impression is that while it's about the singing and the playing, it's not about the performing.

That, I think, is what is wrong with a lot of "worship" music today. It is no longer about just getting out there and praising God at the top of your lungs. It's about hiring the best pianist. It's about being perfectly in sync. It's about the things that make up performance and entertainment. Please don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that we should approach worship in a slipshod manner. I think quite the opposite is true - it should be the best we can make it. But, I do think we need to re-evaluate our motives.

I didn't listen to "The Sound of Heaven" at any length to comment on it. However, from what I heard, I agree that it does indeed sound unpretentious. But I don't agree with your thoughts on it being the way to "...fill your mind and home with music as God intended...."

I have in the past agreed with those who claim that any and all the music a Christian listens to/plays must only be in the service of the Creator. (Okay, those words are my own, but that's the gist of it.) I no longer agree with that line of reasoning. I think I have become rather disenfranchised with the idea of branding myself as a Christian.

God did not create Christians. Man did. The term "Christian" is literally "Little Christ". In the Book of Acts (chapter 11 verse 26) we see that it was first applied to the followers of Christ in Antioch; history - if I remember correctly - tells us that is was used derogatorily. Being a little Christ was not a good thing; you were thought of as crazy, a zealot, followers of a false messiah, etc, etc. They were "turning the world upside down".

Unfortunately, this is no longer the case. Somewhere along the line, Christians became something less than revolutionary. And now some of us need "Christian" music and books and jewellery and bumper stickers to make us feel different. All those things are not in themselves necessarily wrong, but if they are what identify you as a Christian, then you have a problem.

So, is it wrong to listen to music that doesn’t mention God, isn’t “Christian”? If, as was pointed out earlier, it meets the requirements of Philippians 4:8, I don’t think it is wrong. I would prefer that my life be the sign of my difference. Instead of trying to make everything about myself different, I want to be different.

I believe that if you are truly living in the will of God, then your whole life becomes a song of worship to Him... Whether you're literally singing His praises or just sitting in front of a computer screen, reading this.

Okay, that's my three cents. Disagree? Agree? Tell me why.

Mr. Blue Sky
Electric Light Orchestra

Sun is shinin' in the sky
There ain't a cloud in sight
It's stopped rainin'
Everybody's in the play
And don't you know it's a beautiful new day

Runnin' down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly
In the city
On the streets where once was pity
Mr. Blue Sky is living here today

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long
Where did we go wrong?

Hey you with the pretty face
Welcome to the human race
A celebration
Mr. Blue Sky's up there waitin'
And today is the day we've waited for

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long
Where did we go wrong?

Hey there Mr. Blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Everybody smiles at you

Mr. Blue you did it right
But soon comes Mr. Night
Creepin' over
Now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind, I'll remember you this way

Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long
Where did we go wrong?

Hey there Mr. Blue
We're so pleased to be with you
Look around see what you do
Everybody smiles at you

Blue sky

Okay, so today isn't exactly cloudless, but I'm sure you get the point. And I'm using a new wallpaper too. I like this one very much.
